FAQs ABOUT GGA WRESTLING & JIUJITSU
Do I or my child need prior experience?
Not at all! Our classes are designed to welcome beginners while still challenging experienced athletes. Everyone starts at their own pace.
Do I have to have a gi (uniform) for jiu-jitsu?
Not right away. Some months we train no-gi, so they aren’t needed, and other months are gi-focused. If your free trial week lands during a gi cycle, we have loaner gis available. After your trial, a gi will be required, and we offer high-quality gis for purchase directly at the academy.
Do I have to have wrestling shoes?
Wrestling shoes are recommended for wrestling but not required for beginners — many new athletes start in clean athletic socks until parents decide to invest in shoes. For jiu-jitsu, students train barefoot to ensure safety and proper technique. In both cases, no street shoes are ever allowed on the mats.
What should be worn for the first class?
Comfortable athletic clothes — like shorts, leggings, or a t-shirt — are perfect. We require no zippers or buttons for safety and to keep the mats protected.
How much time commitment is expected?
It’s flexible. Most families start with 2–3 classes per week, but there are no requirements. Students can train as often as fits their schedule and goals.
Do boys and girls train together?
Yes. Our classes are co-ed, and kids learn to train respectfully with all partners. This builds confidence, mutual respect, and prepares them for real-life applications of grappling. However, if a parent prefers that their child not participate in co-ed rolling, we’re happy to work around it and make appropriate training pairings.
How safe is live wrestling or rolling in jiu-jitsu?
Safety is always the priority. Students are matched by size, age, and skill level. Coaches closely supervise and teach proper technique so kids learn control before intensity.
How intense are the classes?
Classes are scaled to the student’s age and level. Beginners focus on fundamentals and fitness, while advanced students can push themselves with live practice and drilling.
Does my child have to compete?
Not at all. Competition is encouraged for those interested, but it’s never required. Many students train for fitness, self-defense, or personal growth without stepping into a tournament.
Do parents need to stay during kids’ classes?
Parents are always welcome to watch, but it’s not required. Many families enjoy being part of the community atmosphere in the academy.
Can I/my kid do both programs?
Yes! Many students choose to train in both wrestling and jiu-jitsu, and the two arts complement each other perfectly. Wrestling builds explosive strength, balance, and body control, while jiu-jitsu develops leverage, strategy, and problem-solving. Training in both gives athletes a well-rounded grappling foundation, and we offer scheduling and family discounts that make it easier to participate in both programs.
How do I get started?
